Commissioned by Synergy Percussion and premiered by Rebecca Lloyd Jones, Sophia Ang, Alison Pratt, Robert Oetomo on 18 May 2024, ASSEMBLY @ ACO Pier 2/3, Sydney, Australia

i. time flies
ii. when you’re having fun

This two movement work was composed in celebration of Synergy Percussion’s 50th Birthday. I was honoured to be asked to create a new work for a group I have long admired and been inspired by. Throughout the work, each percussionist explores a ‘clock of objects’ situated upon a bass drum.

It’s a welcome part of Jigalin’s practice that proclaims that fun and compositional merit are not antithetical. It’s great, for once, to be able to laugh in a work, but there’s always substance enough to ensure her works rise above gimmickry. In fact, it’s that base fascination with sound and music-making that makes her works push into territory that’s exploratory and exciting.
